Bioluminescent Kayaking
One of the most unforgettable experiences on Florida’s Space Coast is bioluminescent kayaking. During the summer months, the waters of the Banana River and Indian River Lagoon come alive with a natural light display created by glowing organisms. As you paddle through the water, each movement creates a magical green-blue shimmer, while dinoflagellates and Comb Jellies illuminate beneath the surface.

The peak season runs from July to September, with darker nights around the new moon offering the most vivid displays. Surfing Lessons
If you’ve ever wanted to try surfing, the Space Coast is the perfect place to start. Known as the surf capital of the East Coast, this region has a rich surfing heritage and some of Florida’s most accessible waves. Cocoa Beach, the closest beach to Orlando, is ideal for beginners, with surf schools offering lessons that quickly get you up and riding.

Gentle waves near the shore provide a safe and supportive environment to learn, while more experienced surfers can head towards spots like Cocoa Beach Pier or Sebastian Inlet for stronger swells. With its laid-back surf culture and consistent conditions, the Space Coast offers an exciting and authentic introduction to life on the waves.

Sea Turtle Season
From March to October, the Space Coast becomes one of Florida’s most important nesting grounds for sea turtles. Leatherbacks, Loggerheads, Green turtles and occasionally Kemp’s Ridleys return each year to lay their eggs along the shoreline, creating a remarkable natural spectacle.

Nests are carefully marked to protect them, and early morning visitors may spot the distinctive tracks left behind as turtles return to the ocean. Later in the season, hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness, guided by the moonlight as they make their way to the water.

For a safe and educational experience, guided turtle walks are available at locations such as Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. These tours offer a rare opportunity to witness this incredible cycle of nature while ensuring minimal impact on the turtles and their environment.

Off-the-Beaten Track
Beyond its beaches and waterways, the Space Coast is filled with unique museums and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. In Titusville, the American Space Museum showcases fascinating artefacts donated by astronauts and space professionals, offering a personal insight into space exploration. Nearby, the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum displays an impressive collection of restored military aircraft spanning decades of aviation history.

For something different, the Wizard of Oz Museum in Cape Canaveral presents a colourful, immersive experience with rare memorabilia and interactive exhibits. To round off the day, head to Melbourne’s Eau Gallie Arts District, where galleries, independent shops and over 20 outdoor murals create a vibrant cultural scene.
