On arrival at New York airport, make your way to your mid-Manhattan hotel, and the rest of your day is free.
Day 2: New York
There’s no better way to see the many sights of the Big Apple than by purchasing the New York Explorer Pass. Your choice of three, five or seven attractions will include, among others, ferry and admission to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the 86th Floor Observatory of the Empire State Building, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as access to the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour.
Day 3: New York – Finger Lakes – Buffalo (380 miles)
Leave New York and head for the picturesque Finger Lakes countryside and then on towards the Canadian border. En route, you could visit a winery at Watkins Glen, situated on the shores of Lake Seneca.
Day 4: Buffalo – Niagara Falls – Buffalo
It’s a half hour drive to Niagara, where you have the option of cruising up close to the majestic Falls aboard the exciting Maid of the Mist boat trip. Alternatively, stroll across the Canadian border and ascend the Skylon Tower for a birds’ eye view of the crashing waters below.
Day 5: Buffalo – Amish Country (150 miles)
Today’s drive takes you across the state border and into Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country. This area is also known as Amish Country, whose people have adopted a lifestyle which embraces the area’s natural beauty.
Day 6: Amish Country – Gettysburg – Washington, DC (268 miles)
A fabulous and diverse day in store as you first travel through the beautiful Appalachian Mountains and along the Susquehanna River, before visiting Gettysburg, site of the largest battle ever fought on American soil and scene of Lincoln’s famous address. We suggest you leave time in the evening to see Washington’s iconic monuments by night.
Day 7: Washington, DC
Today is free to discover the many facets to the nation’s capital city and to optimise your time, we recommend the Washington DC Explorer Pass. Your choice of three or five admissions will give you the option of many attractions and rides, including Mount Vernon, the International Spy Museum, the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour and the Washington Monuments sightseeing cruise.
Day 8: Washington, DC – Philadelphia (140 miles)
Make an early start to arrive in Philadelphia before lunchtime. This will give you the afternoon and evening to sightsee the “Birthplace of America”, visiting Independence Hall, Franklin Square and the Liberty Bell, before maybe dining out on the local delicacy of Philly Cheese Steak.
Day 9: Philadelphia – New York (96 miles)
Today head back to New York for your return or onward journey. If you are flying out today, make sure you leave plenty of time to return your car to the airport.
