Leave the Mississippi River behind and travel along Historic Route 66 through the scenic beauty of the Missouri Ozark region to Springfield.
Day 11: Springfield – Tulsa – Oklahoma City
Nowhere is Historic Route 66 more at home than in Oklahoma, where the pavement follows the contours of the land as though it has always been there. In the dust-bowl years of the 1930s, fifteen percent of Oklahoma's population started out on Route 66 in cars or caravans, carrying all their belongings, children, hopes and dreams with them. This section of your trip takes you through rolling countryside, once the haunt of Native Americans, later the territory of cowboys and outlaws, and part of the famous Cherokee Strip.
Day 12: Oklahoma City – Amarillo
Travel through the land where the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians lived and hunted buffalo. Enter the Texas Panhandle – the haven of cowboys, oilfield roughnecks and self-made millionaires.
Day 13: Amarillo – Albuquerque
Before leaving Amarillo, make a visit to Cadillac Ranch, where you will find 10 tail-fin Cadillacs half buried in the sand. This is the land of tumbleweeds, cattle, cotton, and oil. Continue to New Mexico, driving through what once was the hunting ground of the Comanche Indians. Overnight in Albuquerque.
Day 14: Albuquerque
A full day in Albuquerque today. A visit to the historic artists community in the downtown area will allow you the chance to pick up a momento of the trip. Alternatively, venture out to nearby Taos Pueblo to uncover the traditions of Native American indigenous people.
